![]() The two ships played a cat and mouse game until the commander of the paddler, Commander C.H. The Vanderbilt was well-armed with two 100-pounder rifles. When Semmes neared the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, the part paddler Vanderbilt tried to track the commerce raider down. Semmes then rendezvoused with Agrippina near Blanquilla, Venezuela, and Alabama went on several other destructive cruises. A flare was set off, and San Jacinto searched in vain for the Confederate raider. Even though the Federals set up picket boats with flares to observe any movement of the cruiser, Semmes used a heavy squall to escape.
